They are small to large birds, with large round heads, loose fluffy plumage and disk-like faces. Many are nocturnal, and are usually seen roosting quietly in trees during the day, but a few, such as the all-white Snowy Owl or the Short-eared Owl, often hunt by day and may be seen in open country.
